This beautiful prince was supposed to be my entry into the 2018 North American Pipe Carver’s Contest held at the Kansas City Pipe Show. Thanks to the USPS losing my pipe for a week it did not make it to the show in time for the contest. But, at least it was found unharmed and you don’t have to buy raffle tickets to get it.
This is a prince on the large side, with a wide bowl well suited for english blends. The cross-grain blast on the stummel shows the briar’s rings running down the bowl then along the bottom of the bowl and top and bottom of the shank. The subtle contrast stain brings out the grain in the briar, especially the straight grain across the smooth rim of the bowl. Golden-hued boxwood caps the end of the shank over a brass reinforcement for the army-mount mortise. The elegant quill-type German ebonite stem is reinforced at the tenon end with a stainless steel tube to ensure this pipe lasts far into the future.
